Indian singer and composer Shankar Mahadevan is a member of the Shankar-Ehsaan trio, which creates music for Indian movies. Mahadevan received instruction in music from T.R. Balamani and Pandit Shrinivas Khale. He received an honorary doctorate from Birmingham City University in 2023.
One of the greatest Indian vocalists now active, Shankar Mahadevan gained notoriety in Mumbai's storied Bollywood film industry as a composer, playback singer, and associate of the renowned Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy composition trio. He started singing when he was young, but later switched to becoming a software engineer.
He first gained notoriety in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada films through A. R. Rahman compositions, and eventually recorded hundreds of songs for composers. As Shankar has performed, this is simply a partial list.
Synopsis
During a trade mission event in Mumbai in November of the year prior, Andy Street, the mayor of West Midlands County in the UK, announced Mahadevan's honorary doctorate. Respected individuals like the great guitarist John McLaughlin and the table maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain graced the occasion itself.
Birmingham City University (BCU) conferred an honorary doctorate on Indian singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan. He received a doctorate in recognition of his outstanding work in music and the arts.
On June 23, the illustrious ceremony was held at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
Mahadevan expressed his thanks and shared his thoughts on the honor in an exclusive conversation with ANI. He acknowledged the pleasure and expressed his gratitude for the acknowledgment, calling it a very unique honor.
He credited his significant body of work for the success and expressed his gratitude to Birmingham City University and all involved in the decision-making process. Mahadevan saw the moment as a call to action to put in even more effort, write even more gorgeous songs, and promote Indian classical music all over the world.

The Fame
With the publication of the musical album Breathless in 1998, Shankar achieved recognition. The title tracks Breathless, which is almost three minutes long without any verses, stanzas, or breaks, was designed to sound like he sang it in a single breath. Renu Desai served as the album's model while Javed Akhtar, a well-known lyricist, wrote the lyrics. He later began directing music and joined the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy group, which composes the music for Bollywood movies.
