THE INTERSECTION OF MUSIC AND SOCIAL JUSTICE
Artists are using their music to address social justice

Ladies and gentlemen,

Prepare to set out on a transformative journey through the rhythmic intersection of music and social justice, where the world’s most powerful artists wield their melodies as powerful instruments of change.  These virtuosos transcend boundaries, daring to compose lyrical rhythms that challenge the status-quo and give voice to the oppressed.

From the soul-stirring anthems of Bob Marley’s “Redemption song” to the poignant protest ballads of Nina Simone, these maestros are the modern-day bards, striking chords of empathy and demanding equity on the global stage.  Their artistry is a sea of hope, in the quest for a more just and compassionate world.

Brace yourselves for a musical odyssey that resonates with the heart and soul, transcending all boundaries. Music has the power to speak to both the heart and the ears of its listeners.  Musicians have risen to popularity across genres and given voice for the concern of people, for identity crisis and human violation. Music has always been a powerful tool for social commentary. Music can also introduce societal problems such as poverty, racism, abuse and addictions and global issues as hunger, disease and war.  From protest songs during the civil rights movement to modern-day anthems, addressing social and political issues, artists have used their music to express their thoughts, provoke discussions and inspire change.

Artists normally use visual and multimedia content as powerful tools. They share visually appealing photos, concert videos and live-stream performances to give their fans a sensory experience.

They make them see and feel the music through their content.

Now let’s look at the methodology and the wonderful Artists setting forth to address these issues.

1. BOB DYLAN, the legendary fold troubadour used his poetic song writing to address social issues in the 1960’s.  tracks like “Blowing in the wind” became anthems for the civil rights and anti-war movements, sparking dialogue and awareness.

2. BEYONCE the queen of modern R & B. and this Houston Diva, incorporate social justice themes in her music and performances. “Lemonade” delves in the topics like Racism and the female empowerment sparking important conversations and raising awareness.  Her song “America over the past few years” has brought her a devoted fan base and large number of critics.

3. KENDRICK LAMAR, the acclaimed Rapper, combines his storytelling prowess with powerful lyrics addressing systemic inequality police brutality and social injustice in albums like “to pimp a Butterfly”.

4. FELA KUTI the Nigerian afro beat pioneer, used his infectious grooves to confront political corruption and human right, abuses in Nigeria. His music was a catalyst for activism, sparking change in his country.

5. JOAN BAEZ, the folk singer and activist, brought the civil rights movement to life through her music and participation in historic protests.  Her fold ballads like “We shall overcome”  provided a sound track for the fight for equality.

6. B.T.S has been increasing awareness about the significance of maintaining good mental health, the strain, society places on young people, bullying and the LGBT Community.  The song “Love Myself, Love yourself” made people think about how important it to love both themselves and the people in your environment.  This was also an initiative to end violence against children world-wide.

This apart here are a few contemporary Indian musicians who have attempted to voice their protest through art.

1.  Aaatmanirbhar Majdoor by Madara X Spectra

In the wake of the recent news of 16 migrant workers being crushed to death on the train tracks in Maharashtra, Madara has teamed up with Spectra and Seven & Seven and composed a track to throw light on the heart-breaking incident.

2. ‘Fight, React Be a part’

By the Down Troddence, Bengaluru – based folk metal band, “The Down-troddence” released their song ‘Fight, react, be a part’ two weeks after the govt’s hard line stance in implementing the citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of the Citizens. This song featuring Akhil Unnikrishnan aka ‘kel’ from fellow Kerala metal Band was recorded in 2 days.

3. Prabh Deep's ‘CHITTA’

He as a multifaceted artist dives deep into the human psyche, creating an over interesting story about the conflict between the good and evil, that each one of us experiences over our lifetimes. The energetic, club-friendly beat is built around a captivating flute sample and features Delhi-based virtuoso and frequent collaborator Hashbass, who decided to jump on the project as soon as Prabh played him the beat.

4. Ashwini Hiremath ‘Kranti Naari’

This is an outcry against ‘Patriarchy’ which every woman irrespective her social and economic stature has grappled with incapacitating effects of Patriarchy in one form or the other, is something which the track reflect. ‘Kranti Naari’ is not just a song, but also a documentation of a woman’s life in contemporary times.  This is brought bought out by Mumbai-based Rapper Ashwini Hiremath in a very powerful way.

5. I AM AN INDIAN-K4 KEKHO

The ‘Doodh’ Jungle is a public service message from the 1990’s in India, is among the earliest Indian examples of music being used by brands to spread awareness.  Sung by Kunal Ganjawala it spoke of the benefits of drinking milk in a fun way.  This jingle had a hummable tune and was one of the first to use a mixture of Hindi and English lyrics, making it distinct and unforgettable.

Another iconic song “School Chalein Hum” in the year 2006 turned the spotlight on the social problem on Girl Child Education.  It has now been reframed to show how education is the stepping stone to the dreams of young girls.  This song struck a chord on social media and was shared by several Influential policy makers.

This apart another band called the Indian Ocean Band always raises its voice for the current issues in the country.  They do not make music only for entertainment, but also have societal messages in their songs.

This was promulgated by Rahul Ram, the Baul-like singer from the Narmada valley.  He is a vocalist, guitarist, composer and also a sit-down artist with Aisi-Taisi Democracy.

Known as universal language music has long been used as a vehicle for activism.   Another Album Global Goal aims to promote the expansion of Gender Equality around the world.  This Female India Rock Band is Tackling Gender Inequality through their song to sensitize people on the issues that women encounter.

So  friends,

In the canvas of life, artists are the fearless composers of change.  Their melodies echo the pulse of society’s injustice, weaving a beautiful web of harmony, and rebellion.  Through the lyrics that are the keys to our conscience, musicians unshackle the chains of inequality.  They paint portraits of a world where every note is a step towards, justice, where silence is the canvas of complacency.

In this musical revolution, artists are our guides. Through the intersection of music and in justice, they forge a path towards a more harmonious future and world.

MUSIC is the universal language of mankind, in its intersection with social justice becomes the kaleidoscope of change and the melody of equality.

Artists transform their vocals and instruments into weapons of empathy, sparking fires of awareness in the hearts of listeners.

In the rhythm of their defiance, they teach us that music is not just a sound track, but a battle cry for a fairer, and more equitable world.
