The Practice Role – The Secret to Being Truly Great

As everyone knows, it takes a lot of practice to become proficient at anything, and the same is true with music.  Bruce Lee once famously stated, "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."  This was a sentence we used to hear constantly. 

This quotation exemplifies the importance of intentional practice. With instrument practice, you have to be serious and regular. It is not simply playing for hours; it is about deliberate practice and control over a period of time.

Here's how you can enhance your practice sessions:

1. Set specific goals: Instead of saying "guitar practice," try to learn a specific scale or chord progression.
2. Consistency: It is better to play 20 minutes a day than play occasionally at unpredictable intervals of a few hours.
3. Highlight technique: Focus on getting the technique right before worrying about speed. As you practice, your speed will improve as your muscle memory develops.
4. Enjoy the journey: Remember that things move slowly. Enjoy your successes along the way.
